If you don’t know what Candy Crush Saga is, you’re either a toddler, or you literally do live under a rock. No judgment here, though; sometimes, ignorance truly is bliss, and some people might prefer not ever knowing about this game because of how addicting it is. Once you start, it takes the willpower of a saint to stop.
Candy Crush Saga is the world’s most popular match-3 game. It was released in 2012 on Facebook under the shortened name of Candy Crush, and then later launched onto iOS, Android, Fire OS, Windows Phone, and Windows 10–pretty much any device out there. It’s considered one of the first and most successful games that employ the use of a freemium model.
Candy Crush Saga Gameplay
The game can be played in its entirety without ever paying a single cent, though players can opt to buy special actions that allow them to more easily clear difficult boards. Essentially, it’s buying a level skip. You would think that this isn’t a very popular purchase, because part of the reason people play games is to overcome challenges; however, King—the game’s developers—were at one point earning almost $1 million dollars per day which is amazing considering these in-app purchases were their only source of revenue from the game.
For those of you unfamiliar with match-3 games—which have been around for a long time, it was not invented by Candy Crush—basically, players just need to complete levels by swapping candy pieces of the same color to line up and match on the game board. When three (or more) similarly-colored candies are lined up, they’re removed from the board and the player is scored based on the number of matched candies. The empty spaces that are left behind will immediately be filled with new candies of different colors, which has a chance of causing subsequent matches on their own. This would cause a combo match, and multiply the score gained from the initial match. It’s a very simple game, but incredibly addictive thanks to the flashy effects and pleasant sounds.
All in all, it’s the perfect game for casual gamers, and developers know this; there are countless clones of Candy Crush Saga (although to be fair, Candy Crush is itself also a clone) and King has even created more games that are basically the same thing. But despite—or perhaps because of—the game’s simplicity, the formula is obviously successful.
