Clash Of Clans (Like Chess) Is Easy To Learn, Hard To Master

Clash of Clans is celebrating its 8th anniversary this year, and what a well-deserved celebration it is. Launched in 2012, it made huge headways into mobile phones across the world as one of the first asynchronous strategy games in the app stores. Like any good strategy game, it’s simple to learn, but hard to master. And even now, it continues receiving support and updates that continuously change the metagame and keep dedicated players on their toes as they learn and adapt to new, evolving strategies.

It’s safe to say that Supercell, the developers behind Clash of Clans, couldn’t have predicted the scale by which their game would affect the gaming world. Who could forget the 2015 Super Bowl ad they put out, featuring Liam Neeson parodying his famous role from Taken? The game’s popularity would only continue to skyrocket, eventually helping it to break sales records over and over again; as of 2018, it has generated more revenue than any other app with a total of $6.4 billion dollars since launch.

But what is it actually like to play?

Clash Of Clans Gameplay

Clash of Clans is a strategy game where players build bases, amass units, and throw them against other players’ bases and units. The typical game mode is asynchronous; that is, as a player you are usually actively attacking bases of other offline, inactive players.

Attackers have a modicum of manual control over the placement of troops around the target’s base, as well as being able to command units in specific directions as well as using special troops. Defenders generally rely simply on their base’s defense turrets and the layout design of their bases itself to help deter and repel incoming damage.

Winning results in a reward of resources that allow players to build more buildings, upgrade existing ones, buying new troops, and training existing ones.

An update to the game made in 2017 added a game mode that allows players to attack each other’s bases simultaneously, more like traditional real-time strategy games.

Another update further expanded the social aspects of the game by adding Clan Games, where players in the same clan could work together to complete tasks that earn them Clan Points. These points can be used to unlock rewards, including resources, upgrades, and troop levels.
